About High Point University
High Point University is a private institution with a long and proud history of providing quality education to students from all walks of life. Founded in 1924, the university began as a small liberal arts college in High Point, North Carolina, and has been (and continues to be) affiliated with the Methodist Church. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most respected universities in the region, with an enrollment of over 4,500 students from 40 states and 15 countries around the world.
The campus is home to six schools offering more than 50 undergraduate majors and concentrations and 14 graduate programs across various disciplines such as business administration, nursing, health sciences, and more.
What HPU is Best Known For
There is so much to talk about when it comes to High Point University, including academics and athletics (HPU has 16 Division 1 Athletic Teams!). However, one of the things that it is best known for is its beautiful campus. It's easy to see why students visit and fall in love with the campus. Aside from the gorgeous brick buildings, there are 28 botanical gardens throughout the campus and stunning historical sculptures that line the promenade. What makes the landscape unique most of all are the various inspirational quotes that can be found dispersed around campus. Each statue, quotation, and flower were placed intentionally to immerse students in their learning environment.
History of HPU
High Point University opened its doors in 1924 as High Point College. The institution began as a joint venture between the Methodist Protestant Church and the citizens of High Point, North Carolina. When it first opened, the school consisted of three buildings, 9 faculty members, and 122 students. While the school increased, it came to an abrupt stop during the Great Depression of 1932-33 and ultimately had to file for bankruptcy in 1934. Thanks to fundraising and reorganization, the college was able to continue. It gained university status in 1991. In 2005, the university saw massive growth and more than tripled in size. It went from three to ten academic buildings and saw similar attendance growth.
Famous Alumni
High Point University has a long and storied history of producing some of the most successful alums in the world. From entrepreneurs to politicians to athletes, HPU graduates have gone on to make their mark in many different industries around the globe. These illustrious individuals include famous basketball coach Tubby Smith; NASCAR Driver Austin Dillon; MLB pitcher Cody Allen; Olympian Taylor Milne; and Marine Corps Veteran Jack Lucas, to name a few! With such an impressive list of accomplished alums, it's no wonder High Point University continues to attract top students from all over the country (and beyond!).
Life On Campus
HPU offers its students a vibrant atmosphere outside of the classroom. High Point University also provides students with numerous extracurricular activities – from athletic teams competing at both Division I & II levels; to performing arts groups, fraternities & sororities; service learning opportunities through community engagement projects, study abroad options; career development services & internships – to name a few! With so many resources available on-campus as well as nearby cities like Greensboro and Winston-Salem within 30 miles away - High Point University truly provides an ideal setting for any student looking to pursue their educational dreams while having fun along the way.
Life Off Campus
In addition to these on-campus activities, HPU's location near Greensboro and Winston-Salem also provides students with plenty of entertainment options off-campus. From art galleries to music venues to outdoor recreation - there's something for everyone just minutes away from campus! If you're hoping to stay close to campus, there are quite a few eateries you'll need to add to your Google Maps. You know those places you might not read about, but the locals swear by? High Point has a few that are well worth the visit! Start your day off at Debeen Espresso, where you can chat with friends over the most delicious coffee and catch a Yoga class right afterward. At Penny Path Café and Crepe Shop, you can satisfy your sweet tooth with a sweet fruit-filled crepe or choose a savory dish. Either way, you'll be pleased with whatever dish you choose. Sweet Old Bill's is the perfect spot for dinner with seasonal and local favorites and a perfect hangout spot with friends on weekends. These are just a few of the places close to campus to keep on your radar. You won't be disappointed in the small-town feel and vibe each business offers. Consider these a few of the "hidden gems" of High Point.
Favorite Traditions
High Point University is a beautiful institution full of rich traditions. From its esteemed alum network to its active student life, HPU provides students with an ideal setting for pursuing their educational dreams while having fun along the way. One of the most beloved traditions at High Point University is "Derby Day," held on the first Saturday after classes begin. All are invited to attend good old-fashioned relay games, water slides, volleyball, and more on the campus promenade.
Honor Code Signing Ceremony is another tradition that is upheld by incoming students after acceptance to the university. They are invited to sign the official honor code, promising to follow and abide by the university's code.
The Gratitude Project is a newer tradition that brings the student body together at Thanksgiving to share what they are most thankful for and share their appreciation.
All events and activities that bring together the entire campus community are always met with great enthusiasm!
Storage Scholars and High Point University
HPU has been a partner with Storage Scholars since its early days. It is one of the schools with which Storage Scholars has key access to provide top-notch Summer Storage service to its customers. This means they've teamed up with HPU Residence Life and can access the dorms before students move in at the start of school and after they move out at the end of the year. The campus is run by Campus Co-founders Sean Kelley, Kendahl Brown, and Mark Davis for a more tailored and personalized experience.
Over the summer of 2022, Storage Scholars rolled out its brand new "Ship to School" Program, and High Point University was one of six campuses able to test it out. Students received custom shipping boxes and supplies at their homes, filled them with their belongings, and shipped them to the Storage Scholars warehouse (located near campus), where they stayed until a week before college move-in. At that time, the team used their key access to drop off those boxes before students arrived on campus. In addition to shipping boxes from their home, Students could order items from online retailers and have those dropped off. Students and parents raved about the convenience of the program and the efficiency with which it was executed. Kudos to all the student movers for launching a successful Ship-To-School program.
