Mental Health In The Business World

Annabel Barr

May 10, 2021

Being in the business world whether you’re an entrepreneur or thinking of becoming one is a demanding job. The stress from the workload or the anxiety of starting up a business might start to get the best of you, so what are some of the best ways to deal with mental health and why how does it play such a big role in the business world?

Raising Awareness

Mental health is slowly becoming more talked about in different places such as social media but we don’t typically see it associated with the business world. Becoming an entrepreneur although exciting, also brings on stress and a lot more responsibility which can start to deteriorate your mental health, with a negative stigma around it sometimes people want to avoid the topic of conversation of mental health in the business world. Whether you’re just starting out or if you have already had your own business for a while, mental health is difficult to talk about but once the door is opened for the conversation to start it becomes a lot easier to normalize it and allow mental health awareness.

A Competitive Workplace

Mental health is not defined by any one thing or anyone's emotion, there are many different factors that go into your overall mental health and a job can play a big role in affecting it. The business world is a competitive place with creative people coming up with innovative ideas constantly, adding to the stress along with the demands for you to meet your goals. At this point, it can be hard to forget the feeling of when you started, and easy to feel like you’re drowning with deadlines and projects.

Sealing The Deal

When going into any business meeting it’s important to be at your best but how can you be at your best and nail this meeting if your head isn’t in it? So, where can you begin to get started to help improve your mental health and start enjoying your business again?

Starting Before You Even Wake up

The amount of sleep you get can play a major role in your mood, how your day goes, your efficiency, and much more. Although research has shown that about 8 hours of sleep is the recommended amount, most people tend to get much less than that. Sleep is so important because it contributes to your mental health which ties into your ability to give your all to your business. If you’re running on 2 hours of sleep you are going to go into work with a bad attitude as well as being exhausted. Sleep is when your body has time to reset and unwind from the previous day as well as recharge for the day ahead, so without it you’re not allowing yourself that key part of preparing for the day ahead.

Little Things Are Big Things

Every achievement might not seem like the biggest accomplishment, but it is always important to acknowledge them. With so many competitors in the business world, it can be easy to feel like you’re falling behind or that your milestones are minuscule, but each one must be recognized. Recognizing each achievement big or small reminds you that you’re still reaching your goals and can help improve your mindset by helping you to think more positively.

Honing In On Your Goals

While there are many different things to think about, honing in on certain things and setting goals can help improve your mental health drastically. Not only does this allow you to stay organized but this also allows you to focus on the task at hand with minimal distractions. Focusing on certain goals and tasks can help give a feeling of purpose as well as helping improve your productivity by allowing you to move from one goal to the next seeing your progress.

Switching Your Mentality

A positive mindset can be detrimental to improving mental health. Although there can be many obstacles in not only the business world but also in life, having a positive mindset can allow you to feel equipped to tackle anything that comes up. Trying to see things in a positive light can allow you to possibly cope better with stress and anxiety.

Where To Next

After taking some of these steps to help improve your mental health, what’s next? And how can you tie this into your work life?

•          Having these conversations- Although conversations about mental health are typically avoided, bringing it up can help make people feel more comfortable about it.

•          Staying competitive but in check- There’s nothing wrong with competition, especially when it's pushing you to be a better company and overall corporation, it starts to become an issue when you allow it to consume you and cause you to neglect your mental health. So it’s important to stay competitive but within certain parameters.

•          Simple lifestyle changes- Little changes like getting a few extra hours of sleep, seeing things from a more positive perspective, and setting goals for yourself can allow you to see major improvements not only in the workplace but also in your regular life.

Applied To Daily Life

Working to apply each of these different changes to your life will allow you to improve your mental health while seeing the importance of it in the business world. Although there are many changes that can help improve mental health, these are just a few that can translate over into the business world. Often it can be easy to neglect simple things, like a positive outlook on things when it's so easy to see the bad in it, but with simple changes, over time, they will make big changes.

Going In It Alone

With so many competitors it can be easy to feel like you’re working in this alone, so why pay attention to mental health and small details when you could spend that extra time working instead of sleeping? Why see the positives when so much could go wrong? Why set goals when there’s an endless list of things to get done? Why celebrate the little victories when the biggest battles have yet to be won? Although at times these small details might seem tedious, they are crucial to performing your best and giving yourself the best chance of being able to excel in the business world. With it being such a harsh environment, you have the ability to be your biggest supporter, so why not? Implementing these into your life and slowly into your routine will allow these small improvements to become habits that will begin to have an overall positive effect on your mental health which will make its way into your business life.
