College Move-In: Expectation vs Reality

College move-in day is an exciting time— the start of a new chapter in life and the prospect of experiencing new surroundings can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Many people expect move-in day to be a breeze, envisioning scenes of a buzzing campus and eclectic dorm room. The reality, however, is far from it. In this post, we'll examine some of the common expectations and compare them with some of the realities of a typical college move-in day to help prepare you for your move!

Expectation: I will pick out the perfect room decor beforehand and my room will look like it came out of a magazine.

Reality: The size of typical college dorm rooms can be very humbling. In many cases, space is limited and some furniture is already provided. Though you may have visions of the perfect room that is inspired by your favorite influencer, creating it isn’t always the easiest task especially when working with what your school has given you. Still — you can style a beautiful room that you love! It will take some creativity and different types of decor to brighten the space and make it your own. For example, you may consider adding a rug (even if there is already a carpet, it’s probably not the newest or cutest), cute bedding (a headboard may be a great addition too), and artwork or wall decor that embodies you.

Expectation: When I arrive on move-in day, I’ll pull up to my dorm building and start moving in right away.

Reality: Arriving with high expectations of just moving in right away is often not the reality. We would love for it to be that easy, but how many other students are doing the same thing as you that day? Whether you’re on a small or large campus, it is very likely that you will face long waits, lines, and parking issues. This is a very busy day, with many people trying to navigate the same spaces and find the same belongings. You may have to park far away, and wait in line with other students with their families and all your belongings. It's always best to come prepared with patience and understanding that these things tend to take some time.

Expectation: I’ll know how to handle everything on move-in day.

Reality: If you are moving into your dorm for the first time, it is likely that you will feel overwhelmed by the experience of moving and navigating a new place. There is a lot to keep track of, documents to read and sign, and people to coordinate with. It's good to have realistic expectations and prepare yourself for not the easiest day ever. Whether you’re trying to figure out how to get a mini fridge up your dorm stairs or you realize that the mail room where you shipped many of your belongings to is across campus, the day might come with some unexpected challenges.

Expectation: I’m super self-sufficient— I’m sure I can move in alone and comfortably.

Reality: Seeking a helping hand can be a lifesaver amidst the chaos and excitement of college move-in day. The process of moving into a dorm room can be overwhelming, especially for first-year students who are unfamiliar with the layout and logistics of the campus. Having a helping hand can ease the physical strain of moving and unpacking items, while ultimately making the transition smoother. Additionally, college move-in day often involves a flurry of administrative tasks, such as checking in, obtaining keys, and locating the assigned dorm room. Relying on the support of family, friends, or campus volunteers can significantly reduce stress and turn a potentially overwhelming day into a memorable and positive experience.

Expectation: Once I unpack and say goodbye to my family, I’ll go out and enjoy college life right away.

Reality: Everybody expects to settle down well in college and start enjoying the new atmosphere immediately, but experiencing an initial sense of discomfort is very likely. Move-in day can be exhausting, because not only do you have to get everything into your dorm, but you have to unpack it so that it is a livable space for you right away. Dealing with all of these tasks is followed by saying goodbye to your loved ones, adding more emotions to it all. Thus, it is common to experience a bit of uneasiness at the beginning of college and you might not be ready to dive into a ton of socializing and change.

Moving to college is an exciting time, but it is essential to have realistic expectations when it comes to the whole process.
